At Keppler's request Catherine uses a different approach to catch the killer, and in doing so she deceives the rest of the CSI team. The team soon discovers that something is amiss in Catherine’s investigation.

Keppler convainc Catherine de l'aider à falsifier une scène de crime, trompant ainsi leurs collègues. Son but est de mettre enfin la main sur le plus gros fournisseur de drogue de la côte Est. Celui-ci est également le premier suspect du meurtre d'un élu parlementaire, dont le cadavre a été découvert en plein désert. Mais pendant que Keppler met son plan en place, peaufinant les détails pour ne prendre aucun risque, le suspect disparaît sans laisser de traces. De plus, les collègues de Catherine s'aperçoivent que des éléments sont manquants dans ses analyses...
