Billy Bob Thornton (born August 4, 1955) is an American actor, screenwriter, director and musician. Thornton gained early recognition as a cast member on the CBS sitcom Hearts Afire and in several early 1990s films including On Deadly Ground and Tombstone. In the mid-1990s, after writing, directing, and starring in the independent film Sling Blade, he won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He appeared in several major film roles following Sling Blade 's success, including 1998's Armageddon and A Simple Plan. During the late 1990s, Thornton began a career as a singer-songwriter. He has released three albums and was the singer of a blues rock band.

William Robert „Billy Bob“ Thornton (* 4. August 1955 in Hot Springs, Arkansas) ist ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler, Theater- und Drehbuchautor, Regisseur und Sänger. Thornton hatte seine erste Fernsehrolle in der NBC-Sitcom Küß’ mich, John an der Seite von John Ritter und Markie Post. Kritiker wurden zum ersten Mal auf ihn aufmerksam, als er in One False Move in die Rolle eines Bösewichts schlüpfte. Kleinere Rollen hatte er in den Filmen Indecent Proposal, On Deadly Ground und Tombstone. 1996 schrieb er den Film Sling Blade – Auf Messers Schneide, bei dem er Regie führte und auch mitspielte. Dieser ist eine Erweiterung des Kurzfilms Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade. Es geht dabei um einen geistig Behinderten namens Karl Childers. Dieser Film machte ihn zum Star: Für das Drehbuch gewann Thornton einen Oscar, außerdem wurde er in der Kategorie Bester Schauspieler nominiert. 1997 und 2002 gewann er je einen Chlotrudis Award als Bester Schauspieler.
