Scully helps Mulder fake his own death in order for him to go undetected through the Department of Defence and find out the answers to his new questions about the government hoax concerning the existence of extraterrestrial life. Meanwhile, at a joint FBI/DOD inquiry, Scully's attempt to drive out the Conspiracy's informant is halted as her cancer takes a bad turn.

Mulder erfährt, dass er seit Jahren von der Regierung in die Irre geführt wurde. Kurz darauf entdeckt er, dass er überbewacht wird. In einem Handgemenge tötet er den Beschatter. Bei dem Toten findet Mulder Hinweise, die belegen, dass das FBI in die Sache verwickelt ist.

Mulder apprend de la bouche de Kritschgau que ses conversations téléphoniques sont sur écoute. Il découvre alors que l'appartement juste au-dessus du sien est occupé par un membre d'une branche secrète du FBI, qui enregistre toutes ses conversations depuis des années. Afin de mener son enquête pour enfin découvrir la vérité, Mulder demande à Scully de le faire passer pour mort. Après s'être infiltré au cœur de ce centre de recherches, Mulder rencontre Kritschgau, qui lui dévoile tout sur l'organisation...
