Eight years after his wife Helen mysteriously disappeared, Nick Cutter and a team of several others investigate reports of a large animal in the Forest of Dean, and discover that mysterious Anomalies in time and space are appearing and allowing prehistoric creatures to cross into the present day.

Un étudiant rapporte au professeur Cutter un fait étrange : une bête immense ressemblant à un dinosaure aurait été aperçu à proximité de la forêt de Dean. Intrigué par cette histoire, Cutter, dont la femme a disparu il y a quelques années dans les environs, décide de s'y rendre. Dans le même temps, Abby, qui travaille pour le département d'un zoo dédié aux reptiles, rend visite à un jeune garçon ayant fait la découverte d'un drôle de lézard. Très vite la jeune femme se rend compte que l'animal qu'elle a sous les yeux fait partie d'une espèce inconnue. Elle demande au garçon de l'amener à l'endroit précis où il a trouvé le spécimen. Ils prennent alors la direction de la forêt de Dean...
