Stephen Collins is an American former actor born on October 1, 1947, in Des Moines, Iowa. He is best known for his role as Eric Camden, the family patriarch on the television series "7th Heaven," which aired from 1996 to 2007. Collins also played notable roles such as Commander Willard Decker in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (1979) and had television roles in series like "No Ordinary Family" and "Revolution." He grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, and graduated cum laude from Amherst College. His career spanned television, film, and theater, with early roles including appearances in "All the President's Men" and the cult TV series "Tales of the Gold Monkey." Collins was also nominated for an Emmy for his work in the miniseries "The Two Mrs. Grenvilles" and played John F. Kennedy in "A Woman Named Jackie." He acted alongside stars such as Diane Keaton and Shirley MacLaine in various films. Collins' career ended in 2014 following his public confession to sexual abuse against minors. Er ist vor allem als Pastor Eric Camden in der Fernsehserie Eine himmlische Familie bekannt. Nachdem Collins Erfahrungen als Theaterschauspieler gesammelt hat, stand er neben Burt Reynolds in der Serie Dan August zum ersten Mal vor der Kamera. Sein Spielfilmdebüt gab er 1976 in einer kleinen Rolle in Die Unbestechlichen neben Dustin Hoffman und Robert Redford. Es folgten Gastauftritte in Serien (u. a. Die Waltons) und Spielfilmrollen (u. a. in Star Trek – The Motion Picture als Captain/Commander Willard „Will“ Decker). 1981/82 spielte Collins in Die Himmelhunde von Boragora als Jake Cutter erstmals eine dauerhafte Serienrolle. Es folgten Hauptrollen in den Serien Tattingers (1987–1988), Working it Out (1990–1991) und Ein Strauß Töchter (Sisters, 1995–1996). Weiterhin war Collins auch in zahlreichen Kino- und Fernsehfilmen zu sehen (u. a. in Jumpin' Jack Flash und Der Club der Teufelinnen) und übernahm mehrere Gastrollen in Serien. 1996 bis 2007 spielte Collins in der Fernsehserie Eine himmlische Familie die Rolle des Reverend Eric Camden. Collins selbst führte bei drei Folgen der Serie Regie. Sein Regiedebüt gab er bereits 1992 mit dem Musical The Old Boy. Collins schrieb außerdem zwei Romane. Sein erster Roman, Eye Contact (1994) erreichte Bestsellerstatus, ein Erfolg, an den der Nachfolgeroman Double Exposure (1998) nicht anknüpfen konnte.
